Memorial Day

This past Monday was Memorial Day. I really don't pay attention to holidays, unless they're "major," I mean heck, I forgot my husbands birthday was today (oopsie!)

I went to California, where my husband is right now, for the weekend and as we sat at Denny's waiting on our breakfast bright and early Monday morning before going to the zoo, an older gentleman came to our table and handed my husband a small desert camo colored pocket Bible along with a gold challenege coin and three, what felt like plastic, sivler coins with Bible verses. He thanked my husband for his duty to the country and continued on his way handing out the camo colored Bibles and coins to other Marines sitting at Denny's with their families on their day off, something we don't get to do often.

While my husband sat there feeling awkward like he always does about people thanking him on Memorial day or actually, any day. I sat there and thought how much money this cost the man. I figured he was with the USO, an amazing group of volunteers who work hard to make the lives of military personnel easier, whether its with food, drinks, a blanket or just a smile.

In this instance I think what this man did made me feel happier and more proud than my husband. I'm not saying my husband didn't appreciate it, I know he did, he knows at least someone is greatful for what he does on a daily basis. As a Marine wife it's tough. The toughest job in the Corps actually, so the little things people do for my husband or any of the other military people I know makes me feel better to know that he or they're being taken care of no matter where they may go.

I never tell a solider, sailor, Marine, or airman "thank you," it's not that I'm not thankful, but I know how uncomfortable some of them get. So to all of you out there who are serving or have served, thank you. To all of you married to someone in the military, thank you too, I know first hand how hard you have it and I know how lucky you are to have your husband or wife.

Thank you again and to anyone who has said that to a military personel and you feel like they just give you the cold shoulder, don't think that, they probably just aren't sure what to say back, but they do appreciate it and so do we, more than you'll ever know!
